Boulevard Brewing Company

Boulevard Brewing Co. is recognized as the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest with an annual production of more than 200,000 barrels annually. Based in Kansas City, the brewery has long incorporated sustainability into its operations, from its zero-landfill goals and recycled packaging to its green roof and renewable energy investments.

After installing an 18 kW rooftop solar array in 2011, Boulevard looked to expand its use of solar as its operations continued to grow. The brewery partnered with Artisun Solar to add a larger system over its canning facility.

The 540-panel expansion has a capacity of 199.8 kW (DC) and 133.2 kW (AC). The system delivers more than $32,000 in projected annual electricity savings, with lifetime savings expected to exceed $1.4 million.

The project also adds to Boulevard’s long-term renewable energy efforts with the system projected to offset thousands of metric tons of CO₂ over its lifetime.

I always say green also needs to be green. So obviously, we are receiving free energy, if you want to call it that. We are doing the right thing because we are not using fossil fuels for it, and it's offsetting our cost. Overall, I think it's the right thing to do, and it also makes financial sense. Honestly, if we had more square footage available, we would do more. I mean, we would probably slap solar panels everywhere. It's a no-brainer.

The system performed as designed, as advertised. I think we [still] are, I check it monthly. It's performing to the standards and it's, again, it's money. It’s holding up really well. It’s consistent when you compare months to months, prior years, and stuff like that. (...) There's no obvious degradation yet of the system. So yeah, [I’m] very happy about that.
