Mackey & Sons Estimated to Save $850,000 on Electricity Costs With New Solar System

Founded in 1989, Mackey & Sons is a Midwestern company that specializes in manufacturing overhead bridge crane systems, hoists, jibs, and runway systems. Designing and assembling heavy construction equipment is no easy task, and it’s something that demands a great deal of electricity––a commodity that continues to become more expensive year after year. But with its recent strategic pivot to solar energy, Mackey & Sons is projected to save almost $850,000 on electric costs throughout the lifetime of their new system, with over $19,000 estimated to be saved in the first year alone. The USDA highlighted this project in a recent press release about the REAP (Rural Energy For America Program) program.

Rated at 149.7kW, the company’s new roof-mounted array is located at its headquarters in Newton, Kansas. In addition to delivering significant financial savings throughout the lifetime of the system, solar is also helping Mackey & Sons to meet its sustainability goals. The project will offset an estimated 3,700 metric tons of carbon over the coming decades.
